ART EXPO GRAZ 2026: An International Art Fair Finally Arrives in Graz

The Art Fair Guy Art Expo Graz

After two editions of Graz Art Week last year, it was exciting to see another important step for the art scene in Graz: the first edition of ART EXPO GRAZ at the historic Seifenfabrik Graz.

For the south of Austria, this felt like a meaningful moment. Graz has a strong cultural identity, great artists, interesting galleries and a growing creative community, but international art fair formats have been rare in the city for a long time. That is why the arrival of ART Expo International in Graz is worth paying attention to.

The fair took place from 24 to 26 April 2026 at Seifenfabrik Graz, a former soap factory and protected cultural landmark by the Mur river. The venue itself is one of the strengths of the fair. Its industrial atmosphere gives contemporary art a raw, open and energetic setting that works very well for a large scale presentation.

A New International Fair Format for Graz

ART EXPO GRAZ is organized by ART Expo International, a Slovenia based fair organizer with activities linked to Ljubljana, Trieste, Prague and now Graz. The official ART Expo website lists Graz, Trieste, Prague and Ljubljana among its fair locations, with the company contact address based in Ljubljana.

According to the official ticket information, the biennial fair builds on previous editions in Ljubljana and Trieste, which together welcomed more than 13,000 visitors, featured 500+ artists and exhibitors from over 30 countries, and included more than 150 events such as concerts, lectures, fashion shows, workshops and art discussions.

For Graz, the concept clearly follows the same direction: not just an art fair with artworks on the wall, but a broader cultural programme with performances, concerts, talks, workshops and social formats around the fair.

More Than 200 Artists and a Truly International Mix

The first edition in Graz was packed. According to ORF Steiermark, the fair brought 250 exhibiting artists from 34 countries to the Seifenfabrik.

That number alone is impressive for a first edition. Walking through the fair, you could immediately feel the ambition: a broad mix of artists from Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and many other countries. The official exhibitor list also shows how international the fair really was, with artists and exhibitors from across Europe and beyond.

At the same time, this scale also created one of the main challenges of the fair. With so many artists, some presentations were limited to very small spaces, in some cases just around one meter of wall space. This made the fair feel lively and diverse, but also very dense.

My Impression: A Strong First Edition, With Room to Grow

Overall, I was genuinely happy to see this fair happen in Graz – my hometown.

The energy was good. The venue was strong. The international character was visible. The number of participating artists showed that there is real demand for an accessible, artist focused art fair in this region.

At the same time, the first edition also showed where the fair can still improve. Presentation quality varied quite a bit. Some spaces were well curated and visually strong, while others felt more crowded or less refined. That is not unusual for a young fair, especially one with such a large number of artist exhibitors.

For future editions, the biggest opportunity will be to improve the balance between quantity and presentation quality. More breathing space, clearer booth structures, stronger curation and better visual guidance could help the best works stand out more. Especially when an art fair attracts so many artists, the way artworks are presented becomes a key factor for visitors, collectors and sales.

But as a first edition, ART EXPO GRAZ made an important statement: Graz can host an international art fair, and there is clearly interest from artists to be part of it.

A Fair With a Broad Event Programme

One thing that makes ART EXPO GRAZ more than a classic sales fair is the programme around the exhibition.

Graz Tourismus described the fair as a format combining contemporary art with concerts, dance, poetry and literature readings, live art performances and discussion formats.

The official programme included live painting, video art, concerts, guided tours in English and German, workshops, performances, a wine and music evening, artist talks, a round table, a fashion presentation and an award ceremony.

That kind of programme is important, especially for a city like Graz. It gives visitors more reasons to come, stay longer and engage with artists. It also helps create a social atmosphere around the fair, which is often what emerging and independent artists need most: visibility, conversations and direct contact with potential buyers.

Why ART EXPO GRAZ Matters for the Austrian Art Scene

Austria has strong art fair activity in Vienna, but the south of Austria has often been underserved when it comes to international fair formats. Graz has the artists, the collectors, the venues and the cultural infrastructure, but it needs more recurring platforms that connect the local scene with international audiences.

That is why ART EXPO GRAZ is interesting.

It brings international artists to Graz. It gives local artists another opportunity to show their work in a broader context. It creates a new reason for collectors and art lovers to visit the city. And it sends a signal that the Styrian art scene does not have to remain local.

Of course, the real test will be the feedback from artists and the commercial results. I am especially curious to see how sales develop and how exhibitors evaluate the fair after the weekend. For many artists, a fair is not only about visibility. It also needs to create real opportunities, collector contacts and ideally sales.

I also filmed a full walkthrough video of ART EXPO GRAZ 2026 at Seifenfabrik Graz.

The video gives a complete impression of the fair, the venue, the density of the presentation and the variety of artistic positions on show. For anyone who could not attend in person, it is the best way to experience the first edition and get a feeling for the atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

ART EXPO GRAZ 2026 was not perfect, but it was important.

It was ambitious, international, energetic and packed with artists. It showed what is possible in Graz and highlighted the potential of Seifenfabrik as a strong art fair venue. The fair still has room to improve in terms of presentation, curation and overall visual quality, but for a first edition it delivered something that Graz has needed for a long time: an international art fair platform in the south of Austria.

I am excited to see how ART EXPO GRAZ develops, how artists respond to the experience, and whether the fair can grow into a recurring highlight for Graz, Styria and the wider Central European art scene.

For now, it is simply great to see an international art fair coming to Graz.
