I first noticed Marika Thoms at ARTMUC, then again at Discovery Art Fair Cologne, and most recently at Bakerhouse Gallery’s Epic Women exhibition in Graz. Every time, the reaction was the same: this is an artist whose work immediately catches the eye, but also holds it. In a moment when so much abstract painting feels formulaic or decorative, Marika Thoms brings real energy, clarity, and conviction to the canvas.
Born in 1990 and based in Gardelegen in Saxony Anhalt, Thoms came to art through a path that includes training in graphic design and art therapy. That background matters, because her paintings do not feel random. They feel lived through. Her work grows out of instinct, emotion, and physical movement, but it is supported by a clear visual intelligence. Several sources describe her as an artist who turned fully toward her own practice after building experience in adjacent creative fields, and that sense of commitment is visible in the work.
What makes Marika Thoms stand out is her relationship to color. Neon orange has become something of a signature, but her paintings are never just about brightness. They are about tension, release, rhythm, and atmosphere. Acrylic, charcoal, pastel, pigment, spray, scratches, and occasional written elements come together in compositions that feel spontaneous yet controlled. On her official website, the language around her practice repeatedly returns to this combination of freedom and structure, and that is exactly what you sense in front of the work.
There is also something refreshing about the way her paintings balance immediacy and reflection. At first glance, they hit with full force: orange bursts, pink veils, energetic marks, sudden gestures. But look longer and the compositions reveal themselves as carefully built. One gallery text notes that Thoms even checks works in the mirror to test whether their internal harmony still holds, despite all the apparent “explosions” on the surface. That detail says a lot. These are not accidental paintings. They are emotional works, yes, but they are also composed works.
Among the works and series that particularly define her visual language are pieces such as It’s Pink, Pink Clouds, ORANGE EARTH, and CLEAN PALMS. Across them, you see a painter who knows how to create impact without losing nuance. Some works feel airy and luminous, others denser and more grounded, but the common thread is unmistakable: movement, heat, and a strong inner pulse. Even when the palette becomes softer, the paintings still carry a sense of urgency.

What also makes Marika Thoms especially interesting right now is that her career is clearly moving. Her official exhibition history shows appearances and solo or group presentations in Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Rome, Paris, Karlsruhe, Cologne, and beyond. Her own news page lists features and collaborations including Discovery Art Fair, MDR Sachsen Anhalt, Spotify, and an Audi collaboration. In that Audi project, selected works created for the brand were even developed into themes for Audi e tron vehicles via the myAudi app, which is a rare crossover between contemporary painting and lifestyle technology.
And yes, there are public signs that her work is connecting with buyers. While private sales figures are not public, the visible signals are strong: her official website marks numerous works as sold, several fine art print editions are sold out, and gallery listings show originals priced from around the lower four figures up to roughly €5,800, with multiple works already marked sold. Discovery Art Fair also described her in 2024 as an emerging artist already recognized in Germany, with growing interest in her work and ambitions for a broader international presence. Another gallery text goes as far as to call her a successful newcomer and an insider tip for collectors and investors. That should always be read critically, of course, but the overall direction is clear: there is traction.
For me, that is exactly why Marika Thoms is worth spotlighting now. She is not making abstract painting that hides behind theory, and she is not making empty feel good color either. Her work is accessible without being shallow, energetic without being chaotic, and contemporary without chasing trends. It photographs well, reads strongly in interiors, and still rewards close looking in person. That is a rare combination, and one collectors respond to.
Marika Thoms is an artist to watch because her paintings do something many contemporary works fail to do: they create presence. They brighten a room, but they also sharpen it. They bring joy, but they are not lightweight. And once you have seen them a few times in different contexts, at fairs, in galleries, in curated exhibitions, you realize that this is not luck. It is a language she has built for herself, and one that is becoming more confident with every new presentation.
